The sounds we keep

Some sounds are too small to announce themselves: a coat sleeve against a doorframe, the lift settling at a floor, a spoon turning once in a cup.

We keep them because they turn a scene into a place. The best sound design is rarely noticed; it just makes a listener believe they have been there before.
